I have strong background in acute care nursing, with specific training and expertise in palliative care, ethics, and both clinical and didactic education delivery. My doctoral dissertation research from 2013 includes integration of palliative care into a combined medical-surgical intensive care unit (ICU) and evaluation of palliative care in the graduate nursing curriculum at WVU. As a result, the groundwork for the proposed integration of palliative care practices in a combined 32-bed Medical/Surgical ICU in a large academic medical center in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, is in place. I disseminated these research outcomes in Journal of Hospice & Palliative Nursing, a peer-reviewed nursing journal in 2016. I am committed to educating both graduate students and Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) in palliative care. I currently teach both undergraduate and graduate nursing students at West Virginia University School of Nursing. I also mentor graduate nursing students in the clinical setting, as a APRN with the supportive (palliative) care in-patient consult team in a 690-bed, Magnet, academic medical center
I have worked as a palliative care APRN for the past 7 years as a part of the supportive (palliative) care in-patient consult team in a large academic medical center, where we conduct goals of care conversations and provide recommendations for pain and symptom management. Recently, I was granted Advance Certification in Hospice and Palliative Nursing through the Hospice and Palliative Nursing Association. In response to state nursing legislation that went into effect in July 2016 that allowed APRNs signatory authority in completion of Physician Orders for Scope of Treatment (POST) orders, I co-created a state-wide media presentation regarding Advance Care Planning for APRNs. This web-based education is available to all APRNs within the state of WV and required by WVU Medicine for APRN signatures on these forms. Finally, myself and others disseminated research analyzing the influence recent policy change had on APRN completion of POST forms in WV in January 2018, in the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, a peer-reviewed nursing journal.
