Research Interests
The primary focus of Dr. Rockett’s research is the nexus between suicide determination and classification, and substance misuse and abuse. With multidisciplinary collaborators, he developed a new concept, labeled "death from drug self-intoxication," or DDSI, which aims to circumvent problems for researchers, preventionists and policymakers arising from the undercounting of poisoning suicides and mischaracterization of most opioid and other drug-intoxication deaths as “accidents.” This work has facilitated their estimates of the true national toll attributable to suicide and other self-injury mortality (SIM). It is also being translated for clinicians.
Dr. Rockett is collaborating on European suicide studies and in population-based survey research on tobacco use, stress and motor vehicular injury in China. His past research has included statewide hospital emergency department studies of motor vehicular trauma and unmet substance abuse treatment need, respectively, and international studies of injury mortality and suicide data quality.
