Betsy Meredith Elswick, PharmD, is Clinical Associate Professor, in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, at West Virginia University School of Pharmacy.  Dr. Elswick currently serves as residency director for the PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency program with Kroger and Waterfront Family Pharmacy. In addition, Dr. Elswick is coordinator for the WVU School of Pharmacy Alumni Association. She received her degree from WVU School of Pharmacy in 2001 and subsequently completed a PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency with Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Dr. Elswick has received widespread recognition for her role as course coordinator for the School’s Pharmacy Advocacy and Leadership elective. She actively engages student pharmacists to serve as advocates for their profession and patients and leads annual trips with her students and residents to both Capitol Hill and the state’s capitol to learn more about the role of the pharmacist in policy development and health care reform. Dr. Elswick has served on ad hoc committees for the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy to finalize the rules to allow pharmacist delivered immunizations, collaborative practice agreements, and revisions to the Pharmacy Practice Act. She is Past-President of the West Virginia Pharmacists Association and has served as a state delegate to the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) House of Delegates on numerous occasions. As an appointed member of APhA’s Policy Committee and Policy Reference Committee, Dr. Elswick has been actively engaged at a national level in the development of professional policy statements. Her past awards have included the 2005 Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award, the 2006 WV Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award, 2007 Outstanding Teaching Award, 2007 WV State Journal Health Care Heroes Award, 2010 NCPA Leadership Award, and 2010 Bowl of Hygeia. In 2011, she received WVU School of Pharmacy’s Excellence in Teaching and Last Lecture award, given by the School’s visiting committee. Dr. Elswick also received the 2014 Adult Immunization Award from the West Virginia Immunization Network for her work in educating, promoting and providing adult immunizations to citizens of West Virginia. Her research and professional interests include the role of the community pharmacist in improving patient outcomes, as well as topics related to advocacy and leadership.
