About Linda Alexander
Dr. Linda A. Alexander is a professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and currently serves as the senior associate dean for academic, student and faculty affairs for the West Virginia University School of Public Health. Her formal education includes graduate degrees from James Madison University and the University of Virginia. She served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology at Howard University in Washington, DC.
Dr. Alexander’s research primarily focuses on the complex understanding of the burden of tobacco-related diseases among underrepresented and US socially disadvantaged populations. She is a founding member of the Tobacco Research Network on Disparities (TReND) and the Network on Biobehavioral Pathways in Cancer (NBPC), both funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dr. Alexander recently served as the senior volume editor for NCI’s Monograph 22, the first monograph devoted exclusively to a comprehensive understanding of the research literature on smoking attributable diseases, patterns, mortality and morbidity for racial, ethnic and social minorities. Additionally, she has authored a series of refereed publications and served as author and guest editor for special journal supplements with a focus on tobacco-related health disparities. In April 2019, Dr. Alexander was an Executive Planning Committee member and co-host for an FDA-funded conference entitled A Tobacco Regulatory Agenda for Vulnerable and Disparate Groups: Developing a Blueprint for Research, Policy, and Regulatory Standards, convened at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.
In addition to an extensive research portfolio, Dr. Alexander has over 25 years of experience working in and for underrepresented communities, which has helped shaped her expertise in culture’s influence on health behavior. During her time in academia, she has developed several public health courses with a focus on eliminating health disparities and preparing a culturally competent public health workforce. As part of her academic role, Dr. Alexander serves as the WVU School of Public Health’s formal liaison to the Association of Schools and Programs in Public Health’s Academic Affairs Section and as chair for the Diversity and Inclusion Section. She was recently elected as a governing councilor for the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs (ATOD), section of the American Public Health Association.
