What attracted you to WVU surgery for residency?
When I interviewed here, I was very impressed with the size and scope of the hospital. It is a smaller town, but it is a tertiary center serving a huge geographical area. We are a level one-trauma center and we have nearly every specialty here, seldom that any patient requires a transfer out to receive the care they need. We are the ones who have the privilege of receiving the most complex patients, and we are the ones who benefit from the experience, which can only come from caring for them.
What makes our program unique?
We have a growing program, with a great caseload. We operate a lot and we operate early on. I appreciate that we have many surgical specialties, but few fellowship programs. This gives the residents more responsibility on services, as well as more involvement in surgeries. For the majority of cases, we operate one on one with our attending, and they do an excellent job of giving us an appropriate level of autonomy, which keeps us engaged and aggressively encourages development of technical skills.
What do you like about living in Morgantown?
Residency is incredibly busy, and time off is precious. I love that I do not have to travel far at all to do the things I love. There are so many great places to hike, camp, bike or fish. Morgantown is small, but it really has everything I need and most everything I want. There are plenty of great places to eat, and plenty of places to shop. If I ever need a bigger city, which I find is seldom, Pittsburgh is just an hour away.
