A native Arkansan (and fellow mountain partisan), Dr. Whitaker served on the faculty of West Virginia University in 1992 and 1993. After a 25-year hiatus, he had the opportunity to return to the School of Dentistry in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences. In addition to his time at WVU, Steven has served on the faculties of both the Medical College of Georgia and three schools in the University of Arkansas system. He is also the previous director of the Arkansas Department of Health’s Office of Oral Health. As a clinician, educator and public servant, he carries some unique perspectives on the healthcare professions and how to address oral health is addressed.

Dr. Whitaker received a bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of Arkansas and a dental degree from the University of Missouri (KC). He then completed residency programs in oral and maxillofacial pathology at Emory University and endodontics at Augusta University along with a fellowship in Forensic Odontology from the University of Tennessee. Steven is a member of multiple organizations including the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, American Association of Endodontists, American Dental Association, American Society of Forensic Odontology, West Virginia Dental Association and the Monongalia Valley Dental Society. In addition, he is a fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Academy of Dentistry International, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists and Pierre-Fauchard Academy. Dr. Whitaker is also board certified as a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
