Why did you choose WVU? There are many reasons why I chose WVU for my residency training. Due to COVID, I was unable to rotate through various emergency department settings during away rotations. Therefore, I wanted a program that still gave me exposure to academic, community, and rural emergency departments throughout my training to best set me up for life after residency in any practice setting I chose. WVU has just that and allows for unique opportunities to work in a large academic tertiary care center like Ruby Memorial Hospital, but also complete training in both a community setting at UHC and in a rural at St. Joseph’s Hospital or multiple other sites during REMI experiences. Additionally, I wanted a program where I didn’t just show up for my shifts then go home and live my life separate from my colleagues. I wanted to join a family. No other program gave me the family feeling like WVU had and that has only been solidified in my time here.
Brief bio: I grew up in the small town of Swisher, Iowa. I had an interest in becoming a physician in high school and decided to attended Wartburg College for my undergraduate degree, which was known for sending multiple students each year to the University of Iowa for medical school. Thankfully, my plan worked and I then attended the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine for my medical education, just down the road from where I grew up. After having spent all of my life in Eastern Iowa, I decided residency was the perfect time to explore a new area of the United States. Outside of medicine, I enjoy watching Iowa Hawkeye football, landscape and portrait photography, live music, hiking, swimming, and finding the best burger in town.
