About Nicole Stout
Dr. Nicole L. Stout DPT received a Bachelor of Science degree from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania in 1994, a Master of Physical Therapy degree from Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1998, a Post-Graduate Certificate in Health Policy from the George Washington University School of Public Health in 2010 and completed a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in 2013.
Dr. Stout started her career as a clinical physical therapist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 1998 through 2004 where she served as a Lymphedema and Oncology program team leader and developed as a clinical researcher piloting studies on early detection and management of functional impairment in individuals with cancer. From 2004 through 2012 she was a Health Science Researcher and physical therapist with the United States Department of Defense at the National Naval Medical Center, Breast Care Center in Bethesda, Maryland where she was the Primary Investigator leading two investigator-initiated trials on Early Detection and Management of Breast Cancer Morbidity. Her research and publications provided foundational evidence for the Prospective Surveillance Model for Cancer Rehabilitation. Dr. Stout worked briefly for Kaiser Permanente in the Mid-Atlantic Region as a research consultant and prior to coming to West Virginia University, she worked as an independent research consultant from 2013 to 2019.
She has lead and directed national and international initiatives in scientific consensus development for practice pathways and guidelines in cancer rehabilitation and survivorship. These efforts include an international stakeholder consensus on Prospective Surveillance in collaboration with the American Cancer Society in 2012, a National scientific expert consensus on cancer rehabilitation through the National Institutes of Health Rehabilitation Medicine Department in 2015, and she is currently in collaborative leadership roles with the WHO and the American College of Sports Medicine for oncology exercise and rehabilitation guideline development and dissemination.
Dr. Stout has given over 300 professional lectures world-wide, authored and co-authored over 60 peer-review publications, several book chapters, and is the co-author of the book 100 Questions and Answers about Lymphedema.

Research Interests
Research Interests: Dr. Stout is interested in prospective assessment of function and proactive intervention for individuals living with and beyond cancer care. Recognizing the functional morbidity incurred through cancer treatments, her interest is to promote models of care that integrate interventions that optimize function and reduce disablement from cancer care.
